The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is the governing body of cricket in England and Wales. It was created in 1997, combining the roles of the Test and County Cricket Board, the National Cricket Association and the Cricket Council. The ECB’s head offices are at Lord’s in London. The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup is the 12th Cricket World Cup, an international cricket tournament contested by men’s national teams from the International Cricket Council. It was hosted by England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019.

The Challenge

Audiolink has been successfully supplying PTT Motorola radio systems to the ECB since 2007, to manage game operations at grounds across the country. Audiolink also supplies a fixed radio network at London’s The Oval, the home ground of Surrey County Cricket club. It was therefore a logical progression for Audiolink to be chosen by the ICC as partner to supply radio systems to the 11 venues across the UK, from Durham to Somerset, hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup. Working together closely with the ECB and ICC prior to the tournament, it was decided a scalable, single-site digital trunking MOTOTRBO™ Capacity Plus system would best suit the tournament’s needs.

The Solution

Audiolink collaborated with Ofcom to sort out licensing and frequencies for each venue and then travelled to every venue to install and test the Capacity Plus systems, each comprising two MOTOTRBO SLR 5500 Repeaters. Audiolink leased out over 1,200 radios across all the sites, with a mixture of DP4800 and DP4400 digital portable two-way radios and DM4600 radios for the grounds’ control rooms.

Audiolink fully programmed the systems to the ECB’s needs, including the ability to disable radios, selective calling, individual calling, group calling and channel naming, with 10 user groups per venue: match operations, ICC, creditation, sports presentation, RSANE, media, spectator services, incident / secure, spare ops 1 and tech ops 1. Audiolink also supplied a wide range of accessories, including 6-way chargers, spare batteries for every radio, and D-shape and covert earpieces, as well as offering training and ongoing support during the tournament.
